Description: the early post-war mopars are unquestionably some of the best-driving cars of the era. Forget their low sticker prices, what you got for your money was a wonderfully peppy six-cylinder engine, a very competent suspension, and accurate steering that was the envy of the industry. Add in decent build quality and handsome, if not ground-breaking styling, and it's no wonder Plymouth accelerated to the #3 spot behind ford and chevy with returning veterans. This 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe convertible is one of 15,240 built that year, evidence of its popularity. Restored about a decade ago, it was clearly built to cruise, and offers a great change of pace for those of you tired of the same-old fords and chevys at all the shows. The restoration work was done well and the car still presents nicely, although it does, of course, show a few signs of age and use. All the chrome is in good condition, with some of it undoubtedly remaining original. Inside, the interior has been expertly restored, with lovely red leather. The Special Deluxe came loaded with features, including an am radio and heater in the days before such things were standard equipment. All the gauges are functional and clear. The power convertible top is fully functional, and fitted in the original parts cloth, and offers a crystal clear plastic rear window for excellent visibility. The electrical system has been upgraded to 12-volt. Plymouth's rugged and reliable 217.8 cubic inch inline-six provides the power, and in 1949 it was rated at an admirable 97 horsepower. In practice, it delivers entertaining performance, and thanks to the easy-shifting 3-speed transmission, it keeps up with modern traffic without any issues. Parts and knowledge are plentiful, and it would be a mistake to under-estimate this engine's performance. Driving manners are exemplary, with a comfortable ride, nimble handling, and downright impressive braking from the 4-wheel drums. The tires are nearly new firestone 670x15 and it also sports 5 kelsey-hayes chrome wire wheels in excellent condition. This is a neat convertible that is a pleasure to drive, without the investment that a comparable ford might require. With unmatched reliability and a few clever upgrades, you'll find it hard to resist when the sun is shining, and thanks to its exemplary road manners, you'll never complain about the length of your commute again. A terrific car at a great price. Price: $29,900
