The roots of the Mazda motor company go back to the 1920€™s, but the japanese company only startedbuilding passenger cars in 1960. From the onset, they took a slightly different, slightly quirky and always creative approach to building cars. Just four years into series production, they began to experiment with the all newwankel-rotary engine that first appeared withnsu. Mazda were firm believers in the potential of the rotary engine and in 1966, introduced their first production rotary engine car,the Cosmo l10a. The Cosmo name paid tribute to the space race of the timewhich also inspired the crisp, starship-like styling. Thehand-builtCosmo was a €œhalo€ car for Mazda, designed to attract attention to the new technology under the hoodas well as the rest of the Mazda lineup. The original l10a had a tiny, twin rotor engine displacing 982ccbut capable of ahealthy 110 horsepower output. Later, second series cars had the l10b engine which was good for a very healthy 128hp, mated to a slightly longerwheelbase chassis. The crisp and elegant styling was very unique and like the nissan skyline and toyota 2000gt, meant as a light, sportygt car.with Mazda€™s commitment to the rotary engine, they sought to prove its reliability by entering two Cosmos in a grueling 84 hour endurance test at thenurburgring. One car retired at the 82ndhour, while the other went on to finish 4thbehind two works porsches and alanciafulvia, a very impressive outcome from such a young car builder using essentially unproven technology.ultimately, fewer than 1,600 Cosmos were built, with most remaining within japan, making them an extremely rare sight on american roads and show fields. This 1970 Cosmo is a desirable second series carwhich features the more powerful l10b engine. It ispresented in very fine, largely original conditionthroughout. The classic color scheme of white bodywork with ablack and whitehoundstoothinterioris the perfect complement tothe jet-age styling.the paint is in good condition and bodywork straight and free of major flaws. All of the rare exterior trim is in place, down to the signature japanese market wing mirrors.this car rides ona set of ultra-rare, ultra-cool andperiod correct hayashi racing wheels. It is a very well maintained and highly original carthat spent nearly all of its life in japan, only having been imported to our shores this year. It has been subject to a great deal of work to freshen it up, whilst still retaining the original feel.the cabin features correct original black vinyl seats withhoundstoothinserts and an attractive wood rim steering wheel.upholstery is good and the fittings and trim are all present.original instruments and switchgear are all in place and in good order. This particular examplehasthe desirable 5-speed gearbox andeven air conditioningwhich we believe to be a very rare option. Performance is punchy from the tiny rotary engine, and while it needs plenty of revs to stay in the power, the delivery is smooth and enjoyable all the while making its owndistinct€œspace-ship€soundswhen at speed. This Cosmo is a rare, highly collectable yet still usable classic. And even rarer yet in the usa
